NTUSU Ministerial Forum 2017 with Minister Chan Chun Sing: “If you can adapt you won’t lose out”
As long as we stay hungry for progress and not grow complacent, we can stay relevant – we already have the basic ingredients for SG100 to be successful as an individual and as a nation, said Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing at the Ministerial Forum, on 5th April.
Ministerial Forum is an annual event organized by NTU Students’ Union Ministerial Forum Committee. Each year, a minister is invited to the forum to discuss with NTU students current affairs or issues relevant to Singapore. The event provides a platform for NTU students and to understand the rationales behind certain policies, gain insights into social, economic and political issues in Singapore, and to engage with Ministers on a personal level.
Invited as the guest speaker this year, Mr Chan spoke on the topic “Advancing our Competitiveness in the New Economy” at the School of Art, Design and Media Auditorium.
In response to several questions proposed by Mr Chan, also the Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), many among the 400 present stated that complacency was the “one main factor that could cause Singapore to lose its competitiveness.”
Instead of delivering a speech, Minister Chan chose to engage the audience by taking live poll on questions he prepared in advance. After seeing the audience’s responses to the various questions related to the topic, Mr Chan appeared glad and expressed his confidence in the younger generation of Singapore.
“Singapore will be successful if you lend your shoulders for the next generation to stand taller and see further.”
Near the end of the forum, Mr Chan concluded, “We should not look inwards, but treat the world as our market. Challenges can be overcome if we all have a sense of ownership. We are in charge of our destiny, regardless of the external forces at play.”
